NKC Presents- An Evening of Free Improv

Over the past eight weeks, teaching artists featured during the Noise Knowledge Consortium (the experimental music education series at Brinn Labs) have been working with a number of students at Reagan High School as they develop skills related to free improvisation. Now it's time to show off those skills! Join us for a short program full of free improvisations featuring students and teachers alike. More details as they develop.

Teiku (presented by Present Music/RAA)

Teiku (which means “unanswered question”), to document, perform, and breathe new life into these beautiful old melodies. Teiku sets these melodies in a creative music context, balancing carefully-set parameters and free improvisation. The excitement of improvisation lies in its uncertainty and potential for infinite possibilities, and the name itself refers to the collective feeling of discovery that improvising musicians know well: creating cohesive textural environments in real time that are felt so viscerally but cannot be expressed with words.

Seed Sounds #47 w/ guests Boegel, Harms, Warner - Fourth Home

Seed Sounds #47, Sunday, January 20, will feature a multi-generational mix where we once again tap into the most fearless of the UW Whitewater music school roster. Taylor Boegel, saxophones; Margo Harms, percussion; and Brandon Warner, trumpet and electronics, all comprise the engaging improvisational trio, Fourth Home. They'll be joining 2/3 of Seed Sounds this time, since drummer Paul Westfahl is unable to make this date. That leaves Linda Binder on electric violin, mandola, and waterphone, and Rick Ollman, guitar, percussion, and assorted winds. In other words, we'll be equipped with a large array of sound sources including maracas with real seeds.
