Gustavo Cortiñas feat. Mark Feldman, Jon Irabagon, Dave Miller

Sunday, April 13th @8:00

At the Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts - 926 East Center Street

Embracing a multicultural language, while investing in a variety of disciplines within the music itself, Mexican born, and Chicago based drummer, composer, & producer Gustavo Cortiñas, has proved himself to be a dynamic and melodic artist, committed to building empathy and understanding through music, in times of reductive narratives and violent borders. “Cortiñas’ music is bluesy and deeply felt..sometimes it is raucus, sometimes solemn, but the music is always drenched in emotion.” (Modern Drummer). Through his participation in more than 30 discographic productions, “Cortiñas’s deft touch reaffirms his status as one of the great drummers in the City’s new guard.” (ChicagoReader). On this occasion he presents the release of his sixth album as a leader: “The Crisis Knows No Borders”: The music of this album is inspired by global warming and its far-reaching socio-political implications, which transcend borders and manifest in tragic humanitarian crises such as armed conflicts, poverty, famine, climate disasters, and immigration. My hope is to send a message of unity and empathy in these trying times, through music that makes the crisis and its urgency palpable, and a message that humbles us and finds our destinies intertwined in this world and on the path forward.
